Fast-food giant McDonald’s is facing an E. coli outbreak connected to its popular Quarter Pounder burgers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating reports of customers falling ill after eating at McDonald’s. So far, there have been 49 confirmed cases linked to the fast food chain, with one fatality. The outbreak is believed to be linked to slivered onions used in the Quarter Pounder, sourced from a single supplier serving three distribution centers.

As a safety precaution, all local McDonald’s restaurants have removed the implicated product from their supply, and distribution of slivered onions has been paused in the affected region. The Quarter Pounder has been temporarily removed from the menu in 12 states until the investigation is complete: Colorado, Kansas, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

E. coli is a bacteria commonly found in the gut, but certain strains can cause infections leading to gastrointestinal issues. Symptoms can include diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, and dehydration. In severe cases, E. coli can result in sepsis, a life-threatening blood infection. Proper hygiene practices, such as handwashing and surface sanitization, are crucial to prevent the spread of the bacteria.

Most cases of E. coli do not require treatment beyond staying hydrated, but antibiotics may be necessary in more serious instances. It is important for individuals to be vigilant about food safety and hygiene to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading E. coli infections.
