The award-winning journalist and author had a firsthand experience with Alzheimer’s when her dad was diagnosed in 2003. Since then, she’s dedicated her life to understanding the disease, especially in women.
To address the lack of research into Alzheimer’s in women, Shriver founded the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement at Cleveland Clinic, putting women at the forefront of the fight against the disease.
Centering women in the fight against Alzheimer’s
The Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement is the first organization dedicated exclusively to women and Alzheimer’s disease. It focuses on prevention, research, and raising awareness about Alzheimer’s as a women’s health issue.
Shriver emphasizes the importance of women thinking about their brain health at all stages of life. The movement at Cleveland Clinic has funded numerous studies and opened a patient-centric research center in April 2024.
In addition to the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement, the health and research center offers a variety of care options tailored to women, including behavioral health, heart health, and more. Plans are in place to expand research focusing on women’s health at all stages of life.
“I think women should be thinking about their brains from the get-go.” —Maria Shriver, journalist and author
Shriver is the Chief Visionary and Strategic Advisor for the health center, advocating for women’s health and planning to expand services beyond Ohio and Michigan.
The center offers support groups, in-person and online resources, and patient advocates to ensure all women have access to quality care and health education.
“We need to have ongoing discussions about health and expand access to care in all communities,” Shriver emphasizes.
