Christopher Capper, a 33-year-old Australian, fell seriously ill after consuming unfiltered spring water while visiting friends near Mount Elliot in July 2021. It wasn’t until July 2023 that doctors diagnosed him with a waterborne illness that has ravaged his body. Despite taking 16 pills a day, including multiple antibiotics, there is no end in sight to his suffering. The illness has caused severe damage, including destroying a third of his lungs, kidney failure, septic arthritis, and more. Doctors believe the illness, caused by a bacteria found in water and soil, is likely incurable.
Capper, who also battles type 1 diabetes and cystic fibrosis, has struggled physically and financially. Unable to work and nearly depleting his inheritance, he launched a GoFundMe for medical expenses and an insulin pump. The illness has left him in constant pain and hospitalized for weeks at a time.
Despite the challenges, Capper remains grateful for the support he has received. He urges others to be cautious when consuming unfiltered water, as it can lead to severe illnesses. Seeking guidance from health professionals and using certified lab tests to treat and filter water sources can help prevent such tragedies.
