A study in the journal Appetite found that regular chocolate consumption can enhance cognitive performance. Researchers discovered that cocoa flavanols and methylxanthines found in chocolate were responsible for these positive effects.

Georgina E. Crichton, the lead researcher, explained that the cognitive benefits seen in chocolate eaters may be attributed to cocoa flavanols and methylxanthines. Previous studies have also shown that cocoa flavanols can improve memory, executive function, and attention.

Cocoa Flavanols & Methylxanthines

Medium to high doses of cocoa flavanols have been linked to improvements in memory and attention. However, it is essential to choose dark chocolate with high cocoa content to reap these benefits. Methylxanthines in chocolate, such as caffeine and theobromine, provide a natural boost and contribute to better sleep quality.

Chocolate and Your Mood

Dark chocolate consumption has been associated with a lower risk of depression. While further research is needed, eating dark chocolate may have a protective effect on mood disorders. Remember, moderation is key, and chocolate should be enjoyed as a treat.
