I have a soft spot for the fall season. As soon as October arrives, my apartment is filled with pumpkin decor, and I trade in my pale pink lip colors for rich browns and reds. Of course, I also indulge in all things pumpkin-spiced. But beyond just changing my decor and makeup, I also adjust my fall haircare and skincare routines. Cooler weather often leads to drier and duller skin for many of us, but with the right products and ingredients, it doesn’t have to be that way.
To help guide you through the change in seasons, we spoke with board-certified dermatologists Miriam Hanson, MD, Hope Mitchell, MD, and Christina Chung, MD, about the essential skincare ingredients for the cooler weather ahead. These ingredients can help keep your skin looking and feeling great even when it’s cold and dry outside.
The key ingredients to incorporate into your fall skincare routine include hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, ceramides, niacinamide, and retinol. Each of these ingredients offers unique benefits for your skin, from hydration and nourishment to brightening and anti-aging effects. These ingredients can be used in various ways depending on your skin type and concerns.
Hyaluronic acid, for example, is excellent for retaining moisture, making it perfect for colder days. Pair it with vitamin C, which brightens the skin and protects against environmental stressors. Niacinamide is a workhorse ingredient that helps with inflammation and discoloration, while retinol promotes cell turnover and rejuvenates the skin. Ceramides are essential for strengthening the skin barrier and keeping it hydrated.
When incorporating these ingredients into your routine, it’s important to consider your skin type and concerns. While most skin types can benefit from hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and vitamin C, retinol is better suited for normal to oily and combination skin types. Niacinamide is generally well tolerated but can be especially beneficial for those with discoloration and hyperpigmentation.
When transitioning your skincare for colder weather, consider using a gentle cleanser to prevent stripping your skin of natural oils. Adding a humidifier to your bedroom can also help keep moisture in the air and prevent your skin from drying out overnight. And don’t forget to apply sunscreen daily, even in colder weather, to protect your skin from UV rays.
By making a few intentional tweaks to your skincare routine this fall and winter, you can keep your skin looking and feeling its best. Prioritizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, niacinamide, ceramides, and retinol can help combat dryness and dullness while maintaining a healthy glow. And remember, sunscreen is a non-negotiable step in your skincare routine year-round, regardless of the weather outside.
