You may have heard the phrase, “Those who can’t do, teach,” but let me clue you in on a little secret: Those who can’t do also write. This certainly applies to me, as I often cover tips and tricks for improving sleep despite struggling with lifelong insomnia and relying on medication or supplements to get my ZZZ’s.
Recently, I received an email about the new Sleep Enhancement Program at Ananda in the Himalayas, and I was immediately intrigued. This wellness program combines ancient Ayurvedic practices tailored to my dosha (constitution) and lifestyle, aiming to correct my sleep issues through spa treatments, therapy, and delicious cuisine—all set on a former Maharaja’s estate in the Himalayas. I was sold.
Before my trip, I had a virtual consultation with Naresh Perumbuduri, MD, an Ayurvedic physician at Ananda. He was honest about not expecting miracles in just seven days but assured me that I would gain valuable insights into managing my sleep patterns. We discussed my medical history, habits, and health status, providing a solid foundation for my upcoming journey.
Upon arrival at the stunning Palace Estate, I was welcomed with a ritual and a jam-packed itinerary featuring a variety of appointments each day. From consultations with Dr. Perumbuduri to massages, meditations, and emotional healing sessions, the program was a comprehensive wellness experience designed to address my specific needs.
In our consultations, Dr. Perumbuduri identified me as a vata pitta, with a primary vata energy and secondary pitta energy. This was surprising to me, as I had previously thought I was more pitta dominant. He explained how my vata energy was contributing to my sleep issues and outlined a plan to balance this energy, leading to improved cellular function and overall well-being.
Throughout the week, I followed a vata-balancing diet with cooked vegetables, warm drinks, and grounding herbs. The meals were a delightful experience, and I found myself enjoying the delicious offerings at every meal. I also replaced my nighttime sweets with a soothing sleep infusion tea, adding to the overall relaxation of the program.
The treatments and therapies I experienced, such as aromatherapy massages and Tibetan Kyu Nemassages, were transformative and helped me unwind and de-stress. Dr. Perumbuduri even recommended Shirodhara, a traditional Ayurvedic ritual, to help normalize my sleep patterns—despite my initial hesitation.
Despite my regular yoga and Pilates routine, I still struggled with neck and upper back pain that affected my sleep. Dr. Jain provided me with exercises to correct my posture and alleviate my discomfort, enhancing the overall benefits of the program.
In the end, the Sleep Enhancement Program at Ananda in the Himalayas was a truly immersive and effective experience that helped me gain valuable insights and tools for managing my sleep patterns. From the personalized consultations to the rejuvenating treatments, I left feeling refreshed and equipped with a newfound sense of balance and well-being.
