Terrariums are a fantastic way to add variety, depth, and beauty to your plant collection. You can easily create your own upcycled jar terrarium at home, making it a fun and educational project to do with your kids. Upcycling is all about using materials you already have in a new and creative way, giving a second life to objects that would otherwise be discarded. By repurposing a large jar for your terrarium, you not only extend its usefulness but also reduce waste and help the environment.

Terrariums are indoor, enclosed gardens that create a unique environment for plants, allowing you to grow species that may not thrive in your home’s normal conditions. These plant containers require minimal care due to the moisture staying within the habitat longer than traditional potted plants. When creating a terrarium, it’s best to use a clear container with a lid to maintain the proper environment for your plants.

To make your own upcycled jar terrarium, you will need a large jar (2 quarts or bigger), soil mixed with compost, rocks for drainage, pantyhose or a thin fabric barrier, a plant suitable for terrariums, scissors, trowel, and newspaper for easy cleanup. Follow these steps to set up your terrarium:

1. Prepare the jar by cleaning it thoroughly and adding holes to the lid for ventilation.
2. Layer rocks, the barrier, and soil in the jar, ensuring proper drainage and soil coverage.
3. Plant your selected terrarium plant, making sure it fits well in the jar and trimming as needed.
4. Tidy up the jar, water the plant, and close the lid to create a sealed environment for your terrarium.

Keep an eye on your terrarium for any signs of mold or wilting leaves, and make adjustments as needed. With proper care, your upcycled jar terrarium will thrive and bring a touch of greenery to your home.
