Bermuda hurricane resistant solar panels

Island nations are at risk for climate change. A new solar plant will enable Barbuda to reduce annual diesel fuel consumption by 406,000 litres and cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 1 million kg.

The United Arab Emirates UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF) announced that the hurricane-resistant power project developed by Masdar for Antigua and Barbuda to withstand even the fiercest winds is now operational.

After Hurricane Irma devastated Barbuda in 2017, causing widespread destruction and displacing residents, the climate-resistant plant was designed to endure 265 km-per-hour winds and provide a reliable source of electricity for the island.

The hybrid solar, batteries, and backup diesel project is helping Barbuda work towards generating 86% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. The project was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and UAE and local officials.

Masdar implemented the Green Barbuda project under UAE-CREF, the largest renewable energy investment in the region.

The UAE-CREF, supported by ADFD, funded the UAE-CREF project to drive an energy transformation in Antigua and Barbuda. The project aims to reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels by utilizing its solar, wind, and geothermal potential.

Renewable energy is crucial for energy security in small island nations vulnerable to climate change impacts.

The project combining solar PV panels and batteries will help Barbuda cut diesel fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions.

The UAE-CREF initiative plans to implement renewable energy projects in 16 Caribbean countries to lower energy costs and enhance climate resilience.

Collaborative efforts between the UAE and local partners are driving sustainable energy advancements in the Caribbean region.
