Good, Better, Best: The Climate Impacts of Milks

While milk may be beneficial for our bodies, its impact on the environment is not as positive. This has led to a decline in dairy milk consumption over the years, with plant-based alternatives gaining popularity. Understanding the environmental and ethical considerations of different milk alternatives can help consumers make more informed decisions.

Organic dairy milk, while nutritious, has a significant carbon footprint and water usage. On the other hand, rice and soy milk have lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to dairy milk, making them better options from an environmental standpoint. Oat and almond milk are considered the best choices due to their lower carbon emissions, with almond milk being the most water-intensive option.

Making a Choice

Choosing the right milk alternative involves considering various factors such as sustainability, water usage, and emissions. While there is no clear winner among milk choices, all non-dairy options have a lower environmental impact than cow’s milk. Whether you opt for a good, better, or best milk alternative, you are making a positive impact on the environment.
