In 2015, Costco made a significant announcement stating that it would become one of the largest sellers of organic products in the US. This decision came after Costco customers in Seattle gathered over 50,000 signatures to urge the company not to sell genetically modified (GM) salmon. Finally, Costco is taking a stand on GMO Salmon.
Costco has stated that it currently has no plans to sell genetically modified salmon, aligning with other retailers who have also made a similar commitment. This announcement follows the recent approval by the FDA for the sale of GM salmon.
No more GMO Salmon in Costco
“Although the FDA has approved the sale of GM salmon, Costco has not sold and does not intend to sell GM salmon at this time,” stated the warehouse store chain.
The FDA approved AquAdvantage Salmon, a genetically modified fish that grows at a faster rate than normal salmon. Despite this approval, retailers like Costco, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Safeway have chosen not to sell the genetically modified product.
AquAdvantage Salmon, developed by AquaBounty, may hit grocery store shelves in about two years.
We commend Costco for joining other retailers in refusing to sell GMO salmon.
