When you’re looking to get rid of old items during spring cleaning, the typical options are either to drop them off at a consignment shop or throw them away. However, there’s a more eco-friendly and community-focused solution available – the Buy Nothing Project.

With the support of social media groups and the BuyNothing app, over 13,000 volunteers are facilitating local gift economies worldwide, benefiting millions of participants. Members can give gifts or services and freely ask for items they need, all while following national and local laws.

Origin of the Buy Nothing Project

The Buy Nothing Project was initiated in 2013 on Bainbridge Island, Washington by Rebecca Rockefeller and Liesl Clark. Inspired by villagers in the Himalayas who rely on a gift economy, they launched a Facebook group called “Buy Nothing” which quickly grew into a social movement with thousands of members.

By 2022, the Buy Nothing Project had over 5.3 million participants in 44 countries, showcasing its rapid expansion and positive impact.

How It Works

Participating in the Buy Nothing Project is easy – simply download the app and start posting. You can give, borrow, lend, or receive items from your neighbors, creating a more sustainable and connected community.

Whether you have leftover supplies from a project or need something like moving boxes, the Buy Nothing groups can fulfill those needs, saving money and reducing waste.

Environmental Benefits

Aside from saving money and resources, the Buy Nothing Project significantly reduces waste. By sharing unwanted items with neighbors, participants contribute to a circular economy that benefits the environment.

Items like leftover building materials or food can find new homes through these groups, significantly reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.

How to Get Involved

To start participating, head to the Buy Nothing website to download the app or join a Facebook group. Follow the community guidelines and start enjoying the benefits of a local gift economy.

If there isn’t a group for your area, consider starting one to build community connections and reduce waste in your neighborhood.

Experience and Tips

Some members of our team had mixed experiences with the Buy Nothing Project, highlighting the importance of clear communication and realistic expectations when giving away items. Offering a larger appointment window and ensuring clear communication can help improve success rates.

The Buy Nothing Project continues to grow and make a positive impact on communities worldwide.
