Blacks in Green won a $10 million EPA grant to work on sustainability projects in the Midwest. They plan to implement a geothermal heating and cooling district in Chicago. Geothermal energy utilizes the earth’s thermal battery, making it an almost limitless energy source. The DOE sees great potential for geothermal districts across the Midwest and Northeast. Enhanced geothermal systems could generate 90 gigawatts of electricity by 2050. West Woodlawn is exploring geothermal ownership models to prioritize equity. Residents are eager to learn about geothermal and make a change in response to rising energy costs.
