Several brands of frozen waffles are currently being recalled due to a potential listeria outbreak. Major supermarkets are alerting consumers who may have recently purchased frozen waffles about the recall.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a voluntary recall by TreeHouse Foods, an Illinois-based manufacturer, after routine testing revealed possible listeria contamination at one of its facilities. TreeHouse Foods supplies frozen waffle products to various grocery store chains, including Walmart, Target, Publix, Food Lion, Hannaford, and Tops. Additionally, the company manufactures frozen waffles for brands such as Kodiak Cakes, Simple Truth, and Foodhold.
Following a separate listeria outbreak in September linked to poultry and deli meat, this latest recall serves as a precautionary measure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported over 11 million pounds of meat being recalled during the previous outbreak, which resulted in 10 fatalities across 19 states.
Listeria symptoms mimic those of the flu, including fever, headache, fatigue, and body aches. Infections can be particularly dangerous for individuals with compromised immune systems, older adults, infants, and pregnant individuals, as per the Mayo Clinic. Depending on the severity of the infection, mild symptoms may resolve on their own or require antibiotics for serious cases.
Consumers are advised to check their freezers for any frozen waffle products manufactured by TreeHouse Foods and dispose of them, or return them to the store for a refund. At this time, there have been no confirmed reports of illness related to the consumption of the recalled frozen waffles.
