Growing, packaging, transporting, and distributing food is a major source of society’s emissions, accounting for approximately 26% of annual global emissions. Reducing the impact of food production is critical to bringing society back within the planetary boundaries. Wayne McIntyre, co-founder and CEO of Montreal-based Relocalize, aims to “Decarbonize and hyper-localize food & beverage manufacturing.” The company is developing technology and a business strategy for decentralized food production using automated microfactories placed near major consumer markets. Relocalize promises retailers “full control over their supply chain” in exchange for just 1,200 sq. feet of space for their operation. The result, Relocalize claims, will be up to 30% savings on products, 90% less CO2 emissions, and operational savings due to reduced transport distances. Learn more at Relocalize.
