In North America, it can sometimes feel like there’s a dollar store on every corner, offering cheap and throwaway goods. However, new research reveals that many items in these stores are packed with toxic chemicals. Before your next impulse buy at the dollar store, consider the health implications.
Uncovering Toxic Chemicals in Dollar Stores
While dollar store products are known for their low quality, recent reports show that they may also pose a serious health risk. A study by the Campaign for Healthier Solutions found that over half of tested products in US and Canadian dollar stores contain harmful chemicals like lead, mercury, arsenic, and phthalates. These chemicals, found in items including children’s products, can have detrimental effects on human health.
Identifying Hazardous Chemicals and Products
The Toxic Chemicals in Dollar Store Products: 2022 Report discovered harmful substances such as lead solder, flame retardants, and phthalate plasticizers in children’s wireless headphones sold at dollar stores. Additionally, products made of PVC were found to contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and harmful compounds like Bisphenol S and PFAS were present in various items. The prevalence of these toxic substances poses a significant risk to consumers, especially low-income families who are more likely to shop at dollar stores out of necessity.

Families in lower-income neighborhoods are disproportionately affected by the presence of toxic chemicals in dollar store products. Limited access to healthier shopping options leaves them reliant on these stores for essential items, including food and household products.
