the unbearable lightness of disability

About ten years ago, at a music festival, I had the classic ‘I need a bathroom NOW’ moment. My wheelchair-bound urgency led to a hilarious adventure. This is the humor in disability that often goes unnoticed. Disabled life is usually seen as sad and painful, but it has its lighter moments.

Having cerebral palsy, I experience daily physical comedy. Sure, there are challenges, like spilling coffee and navigating stairs, but they also bring laughter. Embracing my body as it is has led to a more joyful outlook. Despite the struggles, finding humor in disabilities can be liberating. It’s about being in on the joke and appreciating the uniqueness it brings to life.

Kelly Dawson is a writer, editor, and marketing consultant based in Los Angeles. She’s written for Cup of Jo on navigating encounters with disabled folks and why NYC is often inaccessible. Follow her on Instagram, if you’d like.
