Columbia University recently appointed Daniel Zarrilli as its first-ever Chief Climate and Sustainability Officer. In this new leadership role, Zarrilli will play a crucial part in helping the university achieve its ambitious climate and sustainability goals as outlined in the Plan 2030 sustainability strategy. His responsibilities include overseeing the implementation of sustainability initiatives, advising on climate-related policy development, and building relationships with stakeholders across the university community. Zarrilli will also lead a steering committee for climate action and provide critical advice to the university president and senior leadership on climate and sustainability matters.

President Minouche Shafik emphasized the importance of incorporating sustainability and climate action into all aspects of the university’s operations through this new role. Zarrilli, with extensive experience in climate policy and resilience, will bring his expertise to Columbia after serving in senior positions within the NYC Mayor’s Office. His work includes leading climate adaptation and resilience efforts in response to Hurricane Sandy and implementing impactful sustainability programs.
