Can You Poop With a Tampon In? An OB/GYN Weighs In

If you’re a tampon-wearer, you may have questions about how and why they work. Even though you can Google these questions, separating fact from fiction can be challenging. There are myths about tampons, like stretching out your vagina or breaking your hymen, but these are false. One common question is whether it’s okay to poop with a tampon in.

According to OB/GYN Stephanie Hack, MD, it’s safe to poop with a tampon in, but hygiene is important. If your tampon string gets contaminated with poop, you could transfer bacteria and potentially lead to infections. While it’s rare for a tampon to fall out when you poop, it can get slightly dislodged when you strain during a bowel movement.

During your period, you might experience more frequent bowel movements, known as “period poops,” which can also affect your tampon. It’s normal to pee with a tampon in, as the urethra and vagina are separate.

To maintain good hygiene, wipe from front to back, hold the tampon string to the side when you poop, and always use clean hands when handling a tampon. If in doubt, it’s best to change your tampon for comfort. Remember, it’s essential to change your tampon every eight hours to avoid health risks like toxic shock syndrome.

Overall, it’s perfectly safe to poop and pee with a tampon in, as long as you take proper hygiene precautions.
