Camels are making a remarkable comeback in Iran, specifically in the lush and fertile lands of the northwestern region. The Bactrian camels, once facing extinction due to changing land use and lack of fodder, are now thriving in Ardabil city. The local Ministry of Agriculture-Jahad, in collaboration with the FAO, has implemented a project to revitalize the camelid sector in the region. This initiative focuses on conservation, sustainable production practices, and tapping into the economic potential of camelid products. By equipping local communities with knowledge, training, and technology, the project ensures the health and well-being of the camels while also empowering camel herders with skills in agritourism and wool processing. The revival of Bactrian camels not only preserves Ardabil’s cultural heritage but also boosts livelihoods and promotes sustainable production practices for the future.
