Amish Apple Scrapple is a beloved dish from Dutch Pennsylvania, known for its surprisingly delicious taste. This 4-step recipe is perfect for a hearty breakfast, but requires overnight prep for best results.

Ingredients for Amish Apple Scrapple

Amish Apple Scrapple Ingredients

  • 3/4 pound bulk pork sausage
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 4 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1/2 cup diced apple, unpeeled
  • 3/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground sage
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 3 cups water, divided
  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Maple syrup

Step 1: Cooking the Sausage

Cook the sausage and onion in a skillet until browned. Save 2 tablespoons of drippings and set aside.

Step 2: Adding Apples

Add butter to the drippings and mix in apple, thyme, sage, and pepper. Cook until apple is tender.

Step 3: Combining Ingredients

Remove from heat and mix in sausage and onions. Set aside.

Step 4: Cooking Cornmeal

Boil water and add cornmeal, salt, and remaining water. Simmer for an hour, stirring occasionally. Chill in loaf pan for 8 hours.

Step 5: Final Cooking

Slice the chilled scrapple, coat with flour, and brown in butter. Enjoy the unique flavors of Amish Apple Scrapple!

Aside from this dish, the Amish are known for various offerings like Shoofly Pie, Dutch Cabbage Rolls, and Chow-Chow relish. Their lifestyle is marked by simplicity and hand-made goods.
