Columbia University’s Interim President Katrina A. Armstrong has appointed Alexis Abramson as the next Dean of the Columbia Climate School. Professor Abramson, currently the Dean of the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth, will assume her new role on January 1, 2025.
As Dean of the Thayer School of Engineering, Professor Abramson has championed a human-centered approach to engineering education, emphasizing rigorous research, cross-discipline collaboration, and community inclusivity. Her accomplishments include enhancing faculty hiring, experiential learning, and industry partnerships.
Prior to her time at Dartmouth, Professor Abramson held various roles at Case Western Reserve University, focusing on sustainable energy technology and technology commercialization. She has also served in the Obama administration and as a technical advisor to Breakthrough Energy Ventures.
Recognized for her impactful research and advocacy in gender equality in academia, Professor Abramson holds advanced degrees in Mechanical Engineering and has published extensively on the importance of multidisciplinary education.
Interim President Armstrong praised the appointment of Professor Abramson and Daniel Zarrilli as Chief Climate & Sustainability Officer, highlighting Columbia’s commitment to climate leadership and sustainability.
She also expressed gratitude to Interim Dean Jeffrey Shaman for his leadership and contributions to the Climate School.
