Artist and filmmaker Jiabao Li was inspired by a kayaking trip in Alaska where ice fell onto her kayak, leading her to create the 15-minute VR film Once a Glacier. The film follows the journey of a girl witnessing the disappearance of glaciers due to climate change.

Jiabao aims to immerse viewers in her created world using VR technology to showcase the impact of glaciers disappearing within a girl’s lifetime. VR allows for a unique perspective on scale, making it a valuable tool for understanding climate change.

In Once a Glacier, Jiabao incorporates sound to evoke the memory and presence of glaciers, drawing inspiration from the Indigenous Iñupiaq culture. The film aims to create empathy and connection with viewers, encouraging action on climate change.
