Kim’s diverse experiences, including working in various campus organizations and studying nuclear engineering at Oregon State, have shaped his journey towards a career focused on sustainability. As he nears completion of the SUMA program in spring 2025, Kim remains committed to finding innovative ways to combat the climate crisis and make a positive impact on the environment.

What drew you to apply to the SUMA program?

Kim’s firsthand experiences of environmental disasters and his desire to address climate change motivated him to seek a comprehensive education in sustainability through the SUMA program. His dedication to creating a greener future drives his commitment to learning and implementing sustainable practices.

What initially sparked your interest in the natural sciences?

Engaging experiences during his undergraduate studies and involvement in environmental initiatives ignited Kim’s passion for the natural sciences. From organizing Earth Day events to studying global change and Earth sciences, Kim’s background laid the foundation for his pursuit of sustainability at Columbia.

Can you elaborate on your responsibilities in your current role and working in the Environmental Health and Safety department?

As a health physicist, Kim ensures the safe use of radioactive materials for research at Columbia University. His role involves providing guidance, training, and implementing measures to minimize the environmental impact of research activities. Kim is dedicated to reducing the university’s environmental footprint and actively participates in sustainability initiatives within his department.

Do you have any favorite courses or highlights from your time in the program?

Kim highlights the significance of courses like “Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage” and “Sustainability and Urban Form,” which have deepened his understanding of sustainability concepts. Engaging with industry experts and exploring real-world sites has enriched Kim’s learning experience and fueled his passion for environmental stewardship.

Any advice for current or incoming students in the sustainability programs?

Kim encourages students to actively engage with the program and seize opportunities to participate in hands-on experiences. By immersing themselves in sustainability events and networking with like-minded individuals, students can broaden their knowledge and make meaningful contributions to the field.
