Buying and selling cannabis in Thailand. Be aware of shifting policies as the government moves to reclassify it as a drug

Despite easy access to cannabis in Thailand in the past, with even organic farms selling it alongside produce, the government’s recent decision to reclassify it as a drug is changing public opinion. A survey revealed that 76% of Thais support this policy reversal, with only a small minority in disagreement.

Thailand’s prime minister Srettha Thavisin has taken a strong stance on limiting cannabis use to medical purposes. This shift is a setback for Thailand’s cannabis industry, which was seen as a potential income booster and attracted both local and international interest.

While some countries like Canada have legalized medical cannabis, Thailand’s new regulations are stricter. It is important for tourists to be cautious when using cannabis in Thailand, as the laws can be harsh on offenders.

Advocacy groups are pushing back against the government’s decision, highlighting the potential economic benefits of a thriving cannabis industry. With the suitable climate, Thailand could become a significant player in the global cannabis market.

Public opinion in Thailand is divided, with around 75% supporting medical use of cannabis, while a smaller percentage opposes any government intervention. The debate continues as the government faces pressure from both sides of the issue.
