Can Press On Nails Damage Your Nails? Pros Explain

As someone who spends Monday through Friday type, type, typing away, long nails aren’t practical for me on a daily basis. However, come the weekend or special occasions, I can’t resist the allure of a stunning, lengthy nail look. Fortunately, press-on nails are a quick and easy option. Brands like Chillhouse, Olive & June, Paintbox, and Kiss offer press-on nails that look professionally painted and not like something out of a ’90s-era drugstore. I always keep my vanity stocked with packs of press-ons so I’m prepared for a perfect mani in record time.

However, despite only using press-ons occasionally, I’ve noticed that my thumbnails look permanently altered. After talking to nail experts, I found out that this is a common side effect of press-ons. The dents and ridges on my thumbnails are a result of the press-on nail use, and I wanted to understand why.

Why do I suddenly have dents in my thumbnails after press-ons?

While my other fingers look fine, my thumbnails exhibit dents and ridges. Dr. Dana Stern, a board-certified dermatologist and nail specialist, explains that trauma to the nail matrix caused by press-ons is the likely cause. The thumbnail has the largest matrix and is more susceptible to damage. Press-ons can push against the cuticle and damage the nail matrix, leading to dents. Additionally, improper removal of press-ons can also damage the nail plate, causing ridging.

How long do these dents last?

Although the dents aren’t immediately visible after removing the press-ons, they typically show up one to two months following the trauma. The good news is that they aren’t permanent and will grow out. Dr. Dana assures that it takes six months to replace a typical adult fingernail.

How to prevent the dents

Since the dents are caused by irritating the cuticle and the underlying nail matrix, it’s essential to be gentle when applying press-ons. Dr. Dana suggests being mindful of the pressure applied and recommends allowing current dents to grow out before applying new nails. Proper removal of press-ons is also crucial to avoid damaging the nails.

Additionally, Mazz Hanna, a celebrity manicurist, recommends using products like Static Nails Pop On Remover or Dashing Diva Magic Off for removal to prevent damage to the nails.
