The global climate is rapidly changing, and we must act quickly to address it. Over the past decade, we have come to realize that our daily habits and lifestyle choices are negatively impacting the health of our planet. However, there is still hope for change. By being creative and putting in the effort, we can slow down and even reverse the effects of global warming. Businesses and corporations play a crucial role in this shift, and many are starting to adopt more environmentally-friendly practices.
The First Smart-Forest City: Cancun
Stefano Boeri Architetti (SBA) aims to build a city in Cancun, Mexico, that is entirely self-sustaining and actively combats climate change. With plans to reforest a 557-hectare area and create mixed-use developments, the city will be a model of sustainability.

For People and Plants Alike
The city plans to accommodate 130,000 residents and 7,500,000 plants of 400 species. Along with a high ratio of trees to residents, there will be green roofs and vertical gardens throughout the city.
Solar Powered City
Partnering with Transsolar, a German solar energy company, SBA aims to power the entire city with solar panels. A unique irrigation system will collect water from the ocean and desalinate it for city-wide use.
No Cars for the Forest City
To reduce carbon emissions from transportation, the Smart Forest City will not allow traditional cars within city limits. Visitors can use the Mobility in Chain (MIC) system, providing electric and semi-automatic cars for transportation.
A Hub for Innovation
The Smart City will serve as a research center for sustainable development, climate change response, and environmental issues. It will facilitate international collaboration and innovation in sustainable urbanism.
What Makes This City So Important
The Smart Forest City in Cancun represents a new era of sustainable living. While not all cities can be rebuilt in this manner, small changes over time can make existing cities more environmentally friendly. Simple actions like switching to renewable energy, using public transportation, and implementing green roofs can contribute to a more sustainable future for all.
- Switching to renewable energy sources
- Using electric cars and public transportation
- Implementing green roofs and vertical gardens
- Adopting sustainable agricultural practices
- Creating city gardens
Reversing climate change requires collective effort from everyone. Small changes in our daily lives can have a significant impact on the environment. Let’s work together to create a more sustainable future for our planet.
