Gillian Murphy is a senior in the dual BA program with Sciences Po, having completed her first two years of university in Reims, France. Originally from Northern Virginia, she spent significant time in Southeast Asia, fostering a deep appreciation for nature. Her environmental activism in France led her to pursue a career in environmental policy at Columbia, where she is also involved in the Student Union for Sustainable Development. Let’s dive into her journey and recent summer internship experience at the Environmental and Energy Study Institute in Washington D.C.
Exploring Sustainability and Environmental Policy
Gillian’s interest in sustainability evolved from a basic understanding to a broader perspective through her studies at Columbia. The sustainable development program introduced her to various aspects of sustainability in different fields, shaping her views on policy, finance, and community-level solutions. She learned the importance of incorporating indigenous perspectives and promoting environmental justice as part of sustainable practices.
A Summer Internship Experience
During her internship at the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI), Gillian worked on science-based solutions in environmental and energy policy. Her role as a development intern involved drafting grant proposals, conducting research on policy issues, and supporting public outreach efforts on Capitol Hill. The experience provided her with valuable insights into nonprofit operations and environmental priorities in Congress.
Preparing for the Future
Gillian’s internship experience reinforced her passion for environmental work and solidified her decision to pursue a master’s degree in public policy or international affairs with a focus on environmental policy. She plans to gain more work experience post-graduation before embarking on her next academic journey.
