The Columbia Climate School is thrilled to announce the Sustainably Developing Your Community pre-college virtual workshop for fall 2024. Communities built with sustainable design approaches are better equipped to tackle the urgent challenge of climate change, impacting our collective future. In a recent interview with Marisa Annunziato, education and outreach coordinator at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory and instructor of the workshop, we discussed the critical role sustainable development plays in community resilience and the importance of youth voices in shaping these processes. Sustainable planning focuses on meeting present needs without hindering future generations, taking into account potential challenges and implementing solutions. Sustainable design and planning involve balancing economic, community, and environmental needs for long-term vision. By implementing sustainable practices, communities can decrease greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to climate change impacts, and increase resilience. Through programs like Rockland Planning Land Use with Students (RPLUS), youth are empowered to advocate for sustainable changes in their communities. Students in the workshop will gain knowledge and practical skills to implement sustainable practices locally, connect with stakeholders, and influence decision-making processes. It is essential for youth to be involved in planning and decision-making for climate adaptation, mitigation, and sustainability as their future is directly impacted. Youth-driven climate action can result in positive changes within schools, neighborhoods, and communities. By participating in the workshop, students will learn how to make a difference in their communities and be equipped to address local challenges related to climate change. Youth involvement in climate action and community planning is expected to increase over the next decade, with a growing recognition of the value of youth perspectives in shaping sustainable futures. The pre-college workshop is open to high school students interested in climate change and sustainability, providing opportunities to expand knowledge and skills beyond the classroom.
