Confronting adversaries, challenges, and trials has been a constant in Venus Williams’s life, both on and off the tennis court. With a 30-year professional tennis career and a diagnosis of an autoimmune disease in 2011, she has faced numerous highs and lows.
How she navigates through these obstacles is something that the players striving to advance to the next round at the 2024 US Open, which commenced on August 26, might ponder about.
Williams’s guiding principle is ensuring that she embraces and enjoys what she is doing, even during the toughest times. She believes that the process itself often serves as the ultimate reward. However, in moments of struggle, this perspective may not always resonate, which is where positive self-talk comes into play.

“I have to push through this moment,” Williams reassures herself. “I choose not to dwell on the how, but I have faith that I will overcome.”
In essence, she reminds herself that she will emerge victorious from any challenge she encounters, employing a mental technique known as a “no-fail mindset.” Williams may not always have a clear roadmap from point A to point B, but she maintains unwavering confidence in her ability to reach her destination.
“For me, it’s about having that self-belief that you will conquer and succeed in your endeavors,” Williams expresses. “Don’t get bogged down by the how. Trust that you will get there.”
Even if the journey isn’t linear and includes detours or setbacks, eventual success is inevitable.
“Sometimes, the thrill lies in being slightly off-balance. It’s invigorating when challenges come your way. They fuel your energy.” —Venus Williams
“You may need to innovate your approach, take an unconventional path, experience setbacks but persevere,” Williams remarks. “Knowing that you will accomplish your goals is paramount.”
According to Williams, the matches where she encountered such situations are the most memorable and rewarding—victory is not guaranteed, and the journey of overcoming hurdles is what makes the experience fulfilling.
“That’s what I live for,” Williams reflects. “I embrace challenges with enthusiasm. We don’t seek fewer challenges; we aim for more skills.”
To enhance her skills, Williams is set to release a book, Strive: 8 Steps to Find Your Awesome, on September 10, outlining her personal framework for well-being. The book comprises eight principles that she applies in her life to maintain mental and physical wellness. These principles may not always align with conventional notions; for instance, “balance” doesn’t necessarily entail perfect harmony in all aspects of life at all times.
“My perception of balance evolves over time,” Williams explains. “It’s about acknowledging your current circumstances and determining what is suitable for you at that moment.”
At times, balance may involve a mix of rest and training, socializing and solitude. Other times, it might mean prioritizing intense effort or complete relaxation. It’s essential to adopt a long-term perspective when striving for balance and grant yourself grace when life seems slightly chaotic, all in pursuit of your aspirations.
“Sometimes, a bit of imbalance can be enjoyable,” Williams remarks. “Embracing challenges can be invigorating.”
Regardless of the alignment of your see-saw, remind yourself that you have the ability to achieve the balance you seek. With determination, you will reach your destination one way or another.
