Coming from the United States, beans on toast isn’t a common dish for us. We usually opt for Instant Pot Baked Beans or Easy Bean Salad. But this bougie beans on toast recipe is a game-changer! With layers of flavor, you’re sure to love it.

While this recipe has a lot of ingredients, it’s very forgiving. You can still make it with the basics if you’re missing a few items.

Best Beans on Toast – Main Ingredients

Olive oil, large butter beans, tomatoes, light brown sugar, green onions, fresh herbs, vinegar, lemon, thick bread, freshly grated parmesan, coarse sea salt

If you don’t have whole, peeled canned tomatoes, you can use diced tomatoes as a substitute. For the gremolata, you can also use different herbs or vinegar based on your preference.

How Do You Make Beans on Toast?

  1. Prepare the Beans: Saute butter beans with garlic and lemon juice.
  2. Saute Onions: Cook onions until soft and translucent.
  3. Blend Tomatoes: Puree tomatoes into a smooth consistency.
  4. Make Tomato Sauce: Combine tomato sauce ingredients and let simmer until thick.
  5. Prepare Gremolata: Mix gremolata ingredients together and set aside.
  6. Add Butter Beans: Stir butter beans into the sauce and let simmer.
