Parents have always done their best to raise children, but there is a noticeable gap in behavior between today’s kids and older generations. Entitlement is on the rise, loneliness is prevalent, depression rates are alarming, and discipline seems to be lacking. The reasons for these changes are complex and go beyond just the passing of time.

Renowned occupational therapist Victoria Prooday has observed a decline in emotional availability among children, largely attributed to over-parenting. Many parents prioritize their children’s happiness to the point where kids make major decisions for themselves without much adult guidance. This can lead to a sense of entitlement and a lack of understanding about the importance of doing things that are necessary, not just what they want.

A case study of a 10-year-old named Timmy illustrates the negative effects of entitlement and technology addiction. Timmy’s excessive screen time has impacted his social and academic skills, leading to emotional outbursts and an inability to cope with real-world situations. This sense of entitlement and lack of responsibility can result in loneliness and emotional distress for children like Timmy.

To raise well-adjusted children, it is important to reduce their use of technology and encourage real-life interactions. Boredom can spark creativity and productivity if children are given the opportunity to find activities on their own. Physical play and social interaction are crucial for developing social skills and self-esteem in kids. Additionally, teaching children responsibility from a young age can instill valuable values that will benefit them as adults.

In conclusion, it is essential for parents to be aware of the potential pitfalls of over-indulgence and entitlement in raising children. By promoting real-life interactions, reducing screen time, and teaching responsibility, parents can help their children develop into well-adjusted individuals who are prepared for the challenges of adulthood.
