Ruth Soukup: Isn’t it true that every time you turn around, it seems like everyone is talking about Ozempic? Your sister, your cousin, your neighbor down the street – they all seem to be shedding pounds with it. It’s hard not to feel tempted to give it a try yourself, or maybe you already have. Even though you were worried about side effects, you haven’t experienced any major ones, so you figure it’s fine, especially with your doctor’s approval. But what if there’s more to the story that you’re not aware of? Today, I’m excited to dive into this topic with my guest, Amy Wilson, a certified health and fitness coach and geriatric pharmacist, bringing a unique perspective to this hot-button issue. Her insights are crucial for women in their forties and fifties, and you might feel compelled to share them with everyone after listening. Welcome to the Feel Better Live Free Podcast, presented by Thinlicious. I’m Ruth Soukup, your host, and in this podcast, we cover everything from weight loss science to practical health tips for busy lifestyles. It’s a touch nerdy, a bit funny, and slightly revolutionary. Hey there and welcome back to the Feel Better Live Free Podcast. I’m Ruth Soukup, the founder of Thinlicious and the creator of the Thin Adapted System. Today, we’re joined by Amy K. Wilson, a health and fitness expert with a background in pharmacy. We’re diving into the long-term effects of weight loss drugs like Ozempic, a topic on many minds today. Amy’s unique perspective sheds light on this controversial issue, and I can’t wait to share it with you. Without further ado, let’s welcome our guest, Amy K. Wilson. Thank you for being here, Amy!

Amy Wilson: Thanks for having me, Ruth. I’m excited to chat with you today. Let me share a bit about my background – I’m a board-certified geriatric pharmacist, a certified nutrition coach, and a fitness professional. My journey started teaching aerobics in college and led me down the path to where I am today. My mission is not just weight loss but keeping people healthy and out of nursing homes. I’ve seen the consequences of poor nutrition firsthand, and it’s driven me to help others live their healthiest lives.

Ruth Soukup: That’s incredibly powerful, Amy. The impact of our choices on our health is undeniable. Let’s talk about weight loss drugs, a topic that’s front and center for many people. As a pharmacist and health expert, what are your thoughts on these medications?

Amy Wilson: As a pharmacist, I aim to minimize the need for medications whenever possible. While they serve a purpose, every medication comes with potential side effects. Diet drugs historically have a troubling track record, often leading to severe health complications. While GLP-1 medications like Ozempic offer weight loss benefits, they also pose risks. They suppress hunger, which may seem appealing, but it’s essential to consider the full picture and potential dangers. Education and prevention are key to avoiding issues with weight loss drugs.
