With the prevalence of dementia on the rise, finding ways to reduce the risk is essential. A recent study focused on the link between olive oil consumption and dementia mortality. Results showed that consuming at least 7g of olive oil daily could reduce the risk of dying from dementia by 28%. This groundbreaking study spanned 28 years and included over 90,000 participants. The study found that substituting mayonnaise or margarine with olive oil resulted in a lower risk of dementia-related deaths. This study adds to existing dietary guidelines recommending olive oil for cardiovascular health but extends the recommendation to brain health as well. Researchers believe the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of olive oil, due to its high levels of monounsaturated fatty acids, polyphenols, and vitamin E, play a key role in lowering dementia mortality rates. Despite limitations, such as the study’s predominantly white participants, the findings are significant and suggest that incorporating olive oil into your diet can have positive effects on brain health and lower the risk of dementia-related deaths.
