Have you ever noticed how fear can often be the barrier standing between us and what we truly desire? It can prevent us from even attempting to achieve our goals and can lead us to self-sabotage even when we do try. This phenomenon has always intrigued me, prompting me to dive deep into research for over two years and survey more than 4,000 women. The result? A book called Do It Scared, delving into all the ways fear holds us back.

While my focus now revolves around helping women over 40 lose weight and improve their health, it’s clear that the fear factor remains a constant. It inhibits us from achieving our health aspirations much like it inhibits progress in other aspects of our lives. Today, I want to discuss how to conquer the fear of failure and truly take the reins of your health for good. Let’s explore why this fear arises, how it manifests, and most importantly, how to overcome it.
Fear of failure is a genuine hurdle that often prevents us from chasing our dreams and endeavors, particularly in the personal and emotional realm of health and weight loss. It’s not just the fear of falling short but also the fear of what that failure signifies and how it affects our self-perception. It’s the dread of not measuring up, not having the capability, or lacking the necessary qualities. It’s the apprehension of appearing inadequate, facing judgment, or disappointing loved ones. It’s the fear of change, the unknown, and stepping out of comfort zones. It’s the fear of relinquishing control and being unable to revert to the status quo.
This fear can immobilize us, trapping us in unproductive patterns, and behaviors even when we know they are counterproductive. It can hinder us from initiating action or taking the essential steps towards progress. It can block us from seeking assistance or acknowledging our need for it. It can deter us from facing our truths and addressing underlying issues. It can prevent us from exploring new avenues or considering alternative approaches. It can deter us from investing in ourselves or committing the required time and effort for tangible results. It can inhibit our patience and comprehension that success is a gradual journey, not an instant result.
Yet, above all, it can cloud our belief in ourselves and our true potential. Recognizing this barrier is crucial because failure is a natural part of life, and embracing it can lead to profound growth and learning. The most accomplished individuals are those who have faced failure head-on, persisting even amidst setbacks.
Empowering examples exist beyond public figures, exemplified by the everyday women in my program and podcast interviews. They courageously confront their fears, taking charge of their health and lives by venturing beyond comfort zones, seeking support, fostering honesty, adapting to change, and valuing self-investment. They demonstrate resilience, persistence, and unwavering self-belief, shaping their destinies.
To overcome the fear of failure, changing our mindset and narratives is imperative. Our self-dialogue profoundly influences our capabilities and achievements.
