Causes and Remedies for Relief

Every month, your menstrual cycle brings along with it the dreaded digestive slowdown that can feel like it grinds to a halt. If constipation is a frequent visitor just before or during your period, rest assured that you’re not alone in this experience. According to Dr. Asma Khapra, MD, an expert from the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), hormonal fluctuations before menstruation can have a significant impact on gut motility. This hormonal dance, especially the rise in progesterone levels, is primarily to blame for the sluggishness in your intestines that leads to constipation, says Dr. Sherry Ross, an OB/GYN and health expert.

While research on this topic is limited, anecdotal evidence and studies on conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) suggest a clear link between hormonal changes, like those during your period, and gastrointestinal discomfort. To combat constipation during this time, here are some simple home remedies you can try:

1. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, with water being the top choice.
2. Incorporate exercise into your routine, even light activities like walking can stimulate bowel movement.
3. Increase fiber intake with foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, seeds, and legumes.
4. Consider using over-the-counter stool softeners or bulk-forming laxatives if needed.
5. Try a magnesium supplement before bedtime to improve colonic motility.

Consistency is key in preventing constipation before and during your period through a combination of a high-fiber diet, regular exercise, hydration, and stress management. If your constipation persists or if you experience other concerning symptoms like severe abdominal pain, blood in your stool, or sudden weight loss, it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional treatment options or medications to help manage your symptoms effectively.

Overall, understanding the hormonal changes that occur during your menstrual cycle can help you navigate and alleviate symptoms like constipation. By being proactive and seeking medical advice when needed, you can ensure a smoother experience during this time each month.
