The Voice of God is Upon the Waters: a look at water in the Talmud, the Torah and Kabbalah

Water plays a crucial role in life, with 60% of our bodies and 71% of the planet being composed of this essential element.

In Biblical Hebrew, water is referred to as “mayim,” represented by the letters “mem” (מ) and “yud” (י), symbolizing its composition of two parts hydrogen to one part oxygen: H2O.

The significance of water is highlighted in various religious texts, such as the Torah, where it is described as the medium through which the Divine Presence manifested, separating the upper and lower waters to bring about light.

Exploring the mystical aspects of water in Kabbalah, the letters “yud” and “mem” symbolize the division and unity of the seas, representing transformation and oneness.

The symbolism of water extends further, with its Hebrew numerical value of 90 corresponding to the letter “tzaddi” and its association with holiness and purification, demonstrated through rituals like immersion in a Mikveh.

Various teachings in the Talmud emphasize the importance of water in daily life, highlighting its sources, purification processes, and allocation for essential needs like laundry.

In closing, the profound connection between water and spirituality is echoed in the prophetic belief that a freshwater spring from Jerusalem will bring healing to all illnesses in the End of Days.
