The Standard American Diet is often criticized for its high levels of sugar, salt, and fat. However, it’s not just these aspects that are concerning – many American food products contain ingredients that are banned in other countries, particularly in the E.U., due to their hazardous effects on human health.

Banned Foods in Europe That Are Still Eaten In America

European countries have stringent food quality standards, leading to the banning of certain additives and ingredients that are still used in American food products. Here are 15 banned food additives in Europe that continue to be consumed in America.

1. Bread

American bread contains ingredients like potassium bromate and azodicarbonamide, which have been linked to cancer. The EU and other countries have banned these chemicals, yet the FDA claims they are safe in small quantities. Why not follow the safer practices of other nations?

2. Mountain Dew

Mountain Dew in America contains brominated vegetable oil (BVO), which can cause various health issues. BVO is banned in the EU and India, highlighting a safety concern in American products.

3. Skittles

American Skittles contain artificial colors linked to allergic reactions and hyperactivity in children. The EU uses natural coloring agents, avoiding these harmful additives. Additionally, Titanium Dioxide in Skittles has been banned in France and the EU due to its carcinogenic effects.

4. Milk

American milk may contain the synthetic growth hormone rBGH, associated with potential health risks like cancer. Opt for organic milk without rBGH to avoid these harmful effects.

5. M&Ms

American M&Ms use artificial food dyes banned in the EU. European M&Ms are dyed with natural coloring agents, aligning with safer practices.

6. Chicken

Chicken imported from America is banned in the EU due to chlorine washing, which is considered a lower standard of food safety. The EU demands higher safety standards throughout the production process.

7. Beef

Synthetic hormones in American beef increase the risk of cancer, leading to their ban in the EU. The use of these chemicals poses a significant health hazard.

8. Pork

American pork producers use the drug ractopamine, which has adverse effects on health. Many countries, including the EU, have banned its use due to safety concerns.

9. Instant Mashed Potatoes

American instant mashed potatoes contain Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA), a potential carcinogen. This additive is banned in many countries for its harmful effects.

10. Sugary Breakfast Cereals

American breakfast cereals with BHT, a possible human carcinogen, are banned in Europe, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. Major cereal companies are working on finding safer alternatives.

Why Are There Banned Foods in the EU and Not In The USA?

The EU’s caution in banning harmful additives contrasts with the FDA’s focus on the probability of adverse effects. The EU follows a hazard-based approach, prioritizing safety, while the USA takes a risk-based approach. Consumers should be vigilant in reading labels to make informed choices about the products they consume.
