Turmeric supplements have been linked to liver damage in five people : The Hearty Soul

As of May 2021, the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases reported over a dozen cases of liver injuries caused by turmeric supplements. The actual number may be higher as some incidents may have gone unreported. Turmeric teas and supplements are popular due to their compound curcumin’s potential to ease inflammatory conditions, but some individuals have experienced liver damage and jaundice after taking these supplements. Although all patients recovered with proper treatment, five cases were presented at the American College of Gastroenterology’s annual scientific meeting in October for further insight into this issue.

One of the cases involved a healthy 49-year-old woman who developed nausea and vomiting after taking a turmeric supplement daily for three months, following the recommended dosage. Her symptoms resolved upon discontinuing the supplement but returned when she resumed taking it, along with the appearance of yellow skin and eyes. Medical tests revealed severe liver injury due to the liver’s inability to function properly and process bilirubin, resulting in jaundice. Treatment with steroids and N-acetylcysteine led to her recovery after three weeks in the hospital.

Similar cases have occurred even when individuals follow the recommended dosage, underscoring the importance of caution when taking turmeric supplements. Quality products and consultation with a healthcare provider are essential. While supplements offer concentrated curcumin, often with additives like black pepper for enhanced absorption, individuals should be mindful of potential risks. Genetic factors may play a role in how the liver metabolizes herbal supplements like turmeric, leading to varying reactions among individuals.

In conclusion, despite the potential benefits of curcumin, it’s crucial to choose high-quality dietary supplements and consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new regimen. Certification from reputable third parties and batch testing for contaminants are indicators of a reliable product. Discussing supplement use with medical professionals can help avoid adverse reactions and ensure optimal health outcomes.
