Lilium is finalizing a deal to sell 100 electric flying taxis to Saudi Arabia’s state-owned airline, Saudia. The announcement is expected at Lilium’s Munich headquarters later this month. This aligns with Saudi Arabia’s futuristic city vision featuring flying taxis.
A Lilium spokeswoman has not confirmed the order, and Saudia has remained silent. Electric flying taxi companies like Lilium and Volocopter GmbH are working towards achieving certification to fly in civilian zones and cities.
Lilium’s small aircraft, with ducted fans and two pairs of wings, aims to start flying taxis by 2026. The news has boosted Lilium’s shares in New York trading, increasing the company’s market value.
For a more eco-friendly option, consider the Swiss-made solar-powered taxi that rolled into Israel over a decade ago. In related news, Dubai launched a flying taxi in 2017.
