Eating food can sometimes pose unexpected dangers, from food poisoning to choking and allergies. While most people don’t view food as a risky endeavor, there are some dishes around the world that can lead to serious health issues, and even death.
Dangerous Foods From Around the World
Ackee fruit
Ackee, the national fruit of Jamaica, may lead to Jamaican Vomiting Sickness if consumed unripe, as it contains a poisonous substance called hypoglycin. To determine its ripeness, look for split seams on the fruit. Only the cream-colored pulp is safe to eat, while the black seeds and pink flesh are toxic. [1]
Casu marzu
Casu marzu, a Sardinian cheese, is infused with maggots which soften the cheese as it ages. This unique delicacy is not easily found due to health risks associated with the consumption of live maggots. Eating it fresh requires caution, as the maggots can jump up to 15 cm in the air. Maggots are not approved for consumption in the EU. [2]
Fugu
Fugu, a Japanese delicacy made from blowfish, is deadly if not prepared correctly. Chefs undergo extensive training to remove all poisonous parts of the fish before serving it. A single blowfish carries enough poison to kill multiple people, making it a high-stakes dish for diners.
Hákarl
Hákarl, an Icelandic dish made from Greenland shark meat, needs to be cured for several months to neutralize toxins. Improperly prepared Hákarl can lead to severe health issues, as fresh Greenland shark meat contains harmful compounds that can be toxic to humans.
Hot dogs
Although hot dogs are a popular snack, they are a common choking hazard for young children. Pediatricians recommend slicing them thinly to prevent any blockages in the airway.
Red kidney beans
Raw red kidney beans contain a type of lectin that can cause digestive issues if not properly prepared. Soaking and boiling the beans before consumption is crucial to remove any toxins. Canned beans are a safer alternative.
Rhubarb leaves
While rhubarb stalks are safe to eat, the leaves contain oxalic acid which can lead to kidney problems if consumed in large quantities. It’s important to only consume the stalks of rhubarb to avoid any health issues.
Sannakji
Sannakji, a Korean dish made from baby octopus tentacles, poses a choking hazard as the suction pads on the tentacles can stick to the mouth or throat. Diners need to chew and swallow carefully to avoid any choking incidents.
