Running Barriers to Entry: Equity and Inclusion Challenges

Running is often touted as the simplest form of exercise, requiring just a pair of sneakers and the will to move. However, the reality is that getting into running can be more complicated than it seems. From the cost of running shoes to the need for a safe neighborhood to run in, there are several barriers that can hinder participation in this activity.

One major barrier to entry is the lack of inclusion in many run clubs. While these clubs may claim to welcome all paces, the reality is that slower runners often feel left behind or unsupported. Creating a judgment-free space, like the Slow AF Run Club, is essential for ensuring that all runners feel welcome and supported.

Safety is another concern, particularly for women and people of color. The prevalence of harassment and violence against runners underscores the importance of taking precautions while out for a run. Brands have started creating products like pepper spray and personal alarms to help runners feel safer while exercising.

The cost of running gear can also be a significant barrier, with running shoes costing over $100 on average. However, there are ways to cut costs, such as buying older models of shoes on sale or checking out thrift stores for running clothes. Expensive race registration fees can also be a deterrent for many runners, but there are organizations that offer discounts to make races more accessible.

Overall, it’s important to recognize and address the barriers to entry that exist in the running community. By promoting inclusion, prioritizing safety, and finding ways to make running more affordable, we can create a more welcoming and accessible environment for all runners.
