After a day at the beach, your lips may be red, puffy, and feeling like they’re on fire. This could be sun poisoning, an extreme sunburn that can lead to body-wide symptoms if not treated promptly. Dr. Azadeh Shirazi, a board-certified dermatologist, explains that lips are prone to sun damage due to their thin skin and lack of protective pigment. Using lip balms or glosses without SPF can worsen the damage. To treat sun poisoning on your lips, seek shade, stay hydrated, apply a cold compress, use an antiseptic spray, try aloe vera, take pain relievers, and apply a healing lip balm. Prevent sun poisoning by wearing SPF lip products, sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat. Consult a doctor if symptoms worsen.
