Research has shown that vitamin D not only helps with bone health, immunity, and mental health, but can also protect our brains. Higher levels of vitamin D in the brain have been linked to a reduced risk of diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia, and improved brain function.

New Research Finds Vitamin D Protects Our Brains

A recent study by Tufts University examined the brain tissue of adults with varying levels of cognitive decline. Those with higher levels of vitamin D in their brain tissue showed lower rates of cognitive decline and better brain function.

How The Study Worked

The study looked at brain tissue from 209 participants in the Rush Memory and Aging Project, a long-term study on Alzheimer’s disease. Higher levels of vitamin D in brain tissue were associated with less cognitive decline and better cognitive function, although the exact mechanisms are not yet fully understood.

Follow Up Studies Required

Further research is needed to fully understand the relationship between vitamin D and cognitive decline. Diversity in study participants is also important, as vitamin D levels can vary among different races and ethnicities.

“We now know that vitamin D is present in reasonable amounts in human brains, and it seems to be correlated with less decline in cognitive function,” said lead author Dr. Kyla Shea. “But we need to do more research to identify the neuropathology that vitamin D is linked to in the brain before we start designing future interventions.”

A Word Of Caution

While vitamin D supplementation can be beneficial, excessive intake can be harmful. It is important to follow recommended dosage guidelines and consult with a healthcare professional before starting any supplementation.

The Bottom Line

Vitamin D may play a role in preventing cognitive decline, but more research is needed to fully understand its effects. Consult with a healthcare provider to determine the right dosage for you.
