Playing with my baby on the floor when he suddenly gets hungry creates a challenge – getting us from the rug to the nursing chair before he starts to cry. With zero hands free, I perform a ground get up move I learned during pregnancy. By placing my legs in a straddle position, engaging my core, and transitioning into a lunge, I easily get up. This move, taught by health coach Azul Corajoria, CPT, helps build strength and muscle memory for everyday tasks like getting up from the floor. Ground get ups are functional strength-training exercises that benefit everyone, not just parents. They work multiple muscle groups and enhance balance and coordination. Practicing them can improve core strength, stability, and reduce pain during pregnancy. To progress with ground get ups, beginners can break down the move into smaller parts and incorporate additional exercises like lunges and squats. Adding weights or trying a Turkish get up can further challenge coordination and strength. The move is beneficial for all ages as it builds strength, mobility, and neuromuscular function essential for daily activities.
