Have you ever experienced a doctor quickly writing a prescription without asking many questions or giving you a chance to question the diagnosis? It’s frustrating, right? That’s why I believe in seeking out functional doctors who take a holistic approach to health. In this article, you’ll read my interview with Risa, a functional nutritionist who found her way to the world of functional nutrition after a similar experience with traditional medicine.
I had a chance to chat with Risa about her journey and her passion for helping people heal through nutrition. She shares her personal story of struggling with infertility and a thyroid condition, eventually leading her to discover the importance of addressing root causes rather than just prescribing medication.

Now, let’s dive into my interview with Risa.
Ruth: Hi, Risa. Thanks for joining me today.
Risa: Thank you for having me, Ruth. I’m excited to be here.
Ruth: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey to becoming a functional nutritionist?
Risa: Of course. I’ve always had a passion for natural health and nutrition, stemming from my upbringing where my mom struggled with diets and food issues. This led me to pursue a career in clinical nutrition and later discover the world of functional medicine. After facing my own challenges with infertility and thyroid issues, I delved into the realm of holistic healing and root cause analysis. It has been a transformative journey, and I now specialize in helping others heal through functional nutrition practices.
Ruth: That’s incredible. Can you share more about the gene mutation MTHFR that you mentioned, and its impact on health?
Risa: MTHFR is a common mutation that affects the body’s ability to process certain B vitamins. This can lead to a range of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, infertility, and more. I find that a large portion of the population carries this mutation, yet many are unaware of its effects. By addressing MTHFR and other underlying causes, we can make significant improvements in health and well-being.
Ruth: It’s fascinating how addressing these root causes can lead to such profound changes in health. How does functional nutrition differ from traditional approaches to nutrition?
Risa: Traditional nutritionists often focus on diet plans and calorie counts, while functional nutritionists like myself prioritize uncovering the root causes of health issues. We take a holistic approach, considering the interconnectedness of the body and aiming to prevent diseases before they manifest. By addressing the underlying imbalances and deficiencies, we can truly heal the body from within.
Ruth: That’s a powerful approach to health. Thank you for sharing your insights and personal journey with us, Risa.
Risa: Thank you, Ruth. It’s been a pleasure to discuss the importance of functional nutrition and holistic healing.
