Understanding Blood Pressure Readings

When monitoring blood pressure, two numbers are measured: the systolic and diastolic pressures. The systolic pressure measures the force of the heart against artery walls during beats, while the diastolic pressure measures the force between beats.

For example, a reading of 120/80 mm Hg means a systolic pressure of 120 and a diastolic pressure of 80. Normal blood pressure is defined as less than 120/80 mm Hg by the American Heart Association.

Blood Pressure Categories

New guidelines have categorized blood pressure levels to help address hypertension early and reduce cardiovascular risks:

  • Normal: Less than 120/80 mm Hg
  • Elevated: 120-129 systolic and less than 80 diastolic
  • Stage 1 Hypertension: 130-139 systolic or 80-89 diastolic
  • Stage 2 Hypertension: 140/90 mm Hg or higher
  • Hypertensive Crisis: Higher than 180 systolic and/or higher than 120 diastolic

Health Risks of High Blood Pressure

Untreated hypertension can lead to severe health issues such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage. High blood pressure is often asymptomatic until significant damage occurs.

Natural Approaches to Blood Pressure Management

Alongside medication, natural approaches like regular exercise, following a heart-healthy diet, reducing sodium intake, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption, managing stress, and quitting smoking can help manage and lower blood pressure levels.

Blood Pressure by Age

Blood pressure tends to increase with age due to various factors. Different age groups have different average blood pressure ranges, with ethnicity also playing a role in readings.

Monitoring Blood Pressure

Regular monitoring of blood pressure is crucial for managing hypertension. Home monitors are convenient for tracking readings, but it is important to follow tips for accurate measurements.

Conclusion

Understanding and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels is key to preventing serious health complications. By incorporating natural approaches and regular monitoring, individuals can effectively manage and lower hypertension risks for a healthier life.
