More than 12 million children in the United States live in “food insecure” homes, meaning they don’t have enough food for a healthy life. This can result in insufficient portions or a lack of nutritious foods.
An Indiana School District is going the extra mile for their students by partnering with Cultivate to provide weekend meals for those in need. Melissa Ramey of the Chamber of Commerce expressed how heartbreaking it is for children to go home without food on weekends.
Cultivate, a nonprofit organization, collects and repackages leftover food from catering companies and cafeterias to create individual frozen meals for kids. By reducing food waste and providing meals to those in need, they are making a positive impact.
This sustainable approach ensures that about 20 students receive a backpack with eight meals every Friday throughout the school year. This program not only eliminates hunger concerns but also brings a sense of care and support to the students.
