The United Nations emphasizes in Sustainable Development Goal 14 that oceans are indispensable for life on Earth. They produce 50% of the oxygen we breathe, absorb 25% of carbon dioxide emissions, and trap 90% of excess heat generated by these emissions. This underscores their crucial role as a shield against the effects of climate change.
Nevertheless, oceans are confronting unprecedented threats from pollution, plastic waste, and rising temperatures. Coral reefs are deteriorating at alarming rates, affecting biodiversity and coastal communities. The United Arab Emirates is constructing artificial islands and industries that must consider the future of its oceans.
