If you’ve ever experienced the discomfort of an ingrown toenail, you understand how painful and irritating it can be. Our toes are essential for daily movement, so when an ingrown toenail occurs, it can hinder our ability to function normally. An ingrown toenail, or onychocryptosis, is a common problem that can happen to anyone at any age and if not properly cared for, it can lead to infection. While more research is needed, some studies suggest a higher prevalence in males aged 14-25.

There are various reasons why ingrown toenails develop, such as improper nail-cutting techniques, tight-fitting footwear, trauma, anatomical factors, and even nail fungus. Nail fungus can be a contributing factor to ingrown toenails, so it’s essential to keep the area clean. Fortunately, there are natural remedies that can help treat ingrown toenails without the need for a doctor’s visit.

To treat an ingrown toenail naturally, you can soak your foot in warm, soapy water multiple times a day or wash it with Castile soap. Apple cider vinegar can also be beneficial for its antibacterial properties. Placing cotton or dental floss under the nail edge can help guide the nail to grow in the right direction.

It’s important to avoid high heels and tight shoes to prevent further pressure on the affected area. Essential oils like tea tree oil and lavender can help reduce inflammation and pain. If you choose to cut the ingrown nail at home, be sure to soak your feet first and cut the nail straight across, avoiding the middle.

To help with healing, apply a homemade ointment made with essential oils and bandage the toe carefully. Change the cotton daily to prevent infection. With patience and proper care, you can effectively treat an ingrown toenail at home.
