Grist, a renowned nonprofit media organization focused on showcasing climate solutions and exposing environmental injustices, has recently acquired The Counter, a nonprofit news site. Specializing in investigating the factors influencing American eating habits, The Counter was launched in 2015 but ceased operations in May 2022 due to financial constraints.

Under this acquisition, Grist will preserve The Counter’s archives and acquire the brand assets of the organization. Grist will uphold a significant part of The Counter’s mission by continuing to explore the impact of factors shaping American eating habits in relation to climate and the environment. To kickstart this effort, Grist is introducing a food and agriculture vertical, welcoming two new staff members:

Ayurella Horn-Muller, a Florida-based award-winning journalist, has joined Grist as a staff writer specializing in food and agriculture. With experience covering climate, justice, and food for reputable outlets, Ayurella is the author of the book Devoured: The Extraordinary Story of Kudzu, the Vine That Ate the South. Frida Garza, the former editor of The Guardian US’s environmental justice series, America’s Dirty Divide, will also join Grist as a staff writer.

Grist, known for its extensive coverage of the food, agriculture, and climate intersection, views the acquisition of The Counter as a significant expansion of its coverage in this critical area.

Grist’s CEO, Nikhil Swaminathan, stated, “Food serves as a gateway to the climate discussion, easily understood by people worldwide. The acquisition of The Counter enables us to present climate coverage as a kitchen table issue, building on the exceptional work of the brand.”

Why we acquired The Counter

Jeffrey Kittay, founder and publisher of The Counter, expressed his delight in Grist’s commitment to maintaining public access to The Counter’s archive and revitalizing food journalism efforts.

Acknowledging the profound impact of global warming on food security, agricultural economies, and food culture, Grist’s executive editor, Katherine Bagley, emphasized the personal nature of these changes in daily life.

To celebrate this milestone, Grist has compiled a downloadable cookbook featuring climate-friendly recipes from its archives and partners, Cool Beans and Pale Blue Tart, spanning entrees, side dishes, and desserts.

Furthermore, Grist aims to ensure continued accessibility to the exceptional work of The Counter staff, echoing its commitment demonstrated through the acquisition of Pacific Standard in 2020 and preservation of its archives.
